On September 3rd, The Motels opened for Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo at The Starlight Bowl in Burbank on a beautiful southern California night, under the stars. After an 18 month hiatus from doing shows due to the pandemic, The Motels sounded better than ever with lead singer and founding member, Martha Davis’s vocals in top form. While many other bands and artists (understandably) felt the impact of Covid-19 and didn’t quite have the creative mindset during that time — Martha kept her fans happy by releasing new material during lockdown including “I Have My Standards” and her latest project under Remarkable Records DAS 7 — with Eric Allaman and Reinhard Scheuregger, which was just released on all digital platforms, September 1st.

The Motels perform “Suddenly Last Summer” at The Starlight Bowl in Burbank.

Sounding better than many other female artists of this day and age, and being on the scene since 1979, Martha Davis is the perfect example that quality vocals and songwriting will continue to be appreciated until the end of time. The Motels will perform a few shows on the east coast next month including a benefit concert for One Roof: “A Concert for the Homeless” in North Hampton, as well as some other possible shows lined up for October.

In addition to The Motels, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo didn’t disappoint while being joined on stage by their amazing band and performing some of their latest and classic hits including “Love Is A Battlefield”, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” — and a beautiful and haunting version of “We Belong” accompanied by Neil Giraldo on piano.

All in all, I couldn’t have been more thrilled to catch these two incredible shows in person and to see live music FINALLY making a much needed comeback!
