The Cast Of The 1961 Movie ‘West Side Story’ Reunite At The Paley Center For Media To Celebrate Choreographer Jerome Robbins
The original cast members of the 1961 movie ‘West Side Story’ came out to celebrate the incomparable work of choreographer and director Jerome Robbins at the Paley Center For Media in Beverly Hills on October 11th. Partnering with ‘Words On Dance’, the venue hosted George Chakiris, “Bernardo” Rita Moreno, “Anita” Russ Tamblyn and “Riff” Eliot Feld “Baby John” -while Broadway and Film Director/Choreographer Rob Marshall, served as Moderator.
‘West Side Story’ which was released in 1961 also starring (the late) Natalie Wood as “Maria” was a musical based on the life of New York street gangs “The Jets” and “The Sharks” from the rough upper west side, as they fight over the control of their turf -while complicating matters more, as one of the gang members falls for the sister of one of their rivals. Needless to say, the movie is one of the greatest in history, with an incredible soundtrack by Leonard Bernstein featuring the spine chilling ‘Somewhere’, which never fails to leave audiences breathless.
The cast who still look amazing to this day, spoke of their delight to be able to celebrate a movie that played such a huge part of their lives, while also, becoming a timeless classic over the years. When speaking with George Chakiris who played “Bernardo” in the movie, he couldn’t speak highly enough of being part of such an incredible cast and movie like ‘West Side Story’ -and praised his experiences of working under the guidance of director and choreographer Jerome Robbins -whom he says was an incredible teacher.
It was such an honor to be a part of this memorable night celebrating ‘West Side Story’. Many thanks to the Paley Center For Media and Megan Levy of The Lippin Group as always, for their tireless work!
