We recently caught up with Mauve — the talented Toronto-based singer and songwriter who just released her catchy new single ‘Out Of Nowhere’. We also talked about who inspired her growing up as an artist and the process of writing and composing music. Here is what she had to say:

Please introduce yourself to the readers and how you first got into music:

My name is Mauve and I am a singer & songwriter from Toronto, Canada. I really enjoy blending different fusions of sounds and most of my songs have an Electro-R&B vibe to them. I give credit to Toronto for providing many outlets and opportunities to explore different styles of music through its vibrancy and the diversity of its people. From the age of 14, I started writing my own songs and taught myself how to play the piano and guitar.

I gradually started to make my own demos and posted them online to share with people, and it was so rewarding getting feedback for what I was making on my own — which led me to start networking with other artists. Now I have released my debut EP , and I’ve been so grateful for the growing support from the music scene. People always tell me they are surprised by my voice when they first hear me sing because they don’t expect it to come out of such a small frame.

Who were some of your influences growing up?

For over a decade I have been a fan of 90s R&B music, especially the positive messages and smooth vocal harmonies delivered from TLC. The deep and emotional vocals of Amy Winehouse have also played a huge influence on how I sing as well. I am also constantly inspired by theatrical performances, as I remember going to various musicals when I was younger and just being in awe of the strong passion and feeling that the actors put into their work. Seeing the lively combination of dance, singing, and expression just hit me and grew this deep appreciation for the ability to convey various emotions on stage.

Tell us about your new single ‘Out of Nowhere’:

This song is like a thank-you letter to someone who has been there for you when you couldn’t be there for yourself. It’s about that connection you have with someone that you can’t describe to anyone, but it makes perfect sense. It’s that ecstatic feeling that you get when this person comes into your life because you never thought that this kind of connection would be possible, you’ve only dreamed about it or written songs about it.

I’m usually someone that likes to plan ahead and have a clear direction of what’s going on in my life, but what this song is talking about is the love that takes a course of its own and unfolds without any planning on your part. All in all, this song is an expression of gratitude for that special person who never pressures you to be anything other than yourself, and you truly bring out the best in each other. At the time of this interview it’s reached over 65,000 plays on Youtube — so its really sweet to see the support it’s getting!

How do you come up with the concepts to write your songs and the process, etc?

For me, it happens very organically because it has to first begin with something I am going through or inspired by — be it a positive or more difficult circumstance. I can’t really force myself to create a song without being driven by anything, so whenever a spark of inspiration comes by, I make sure to work on it to shape it into something tangible! Sometimes if a catchy melody or idea pops into my head at the most random moment, I record a bit of it on my phone so that I can go back to it later without losing it. Once the main structure of the song is complete, I use my software program and MIDI keyboard at home to lay out its components, and then send the demo to the producer that I’m collaborating with to professionally record it. It’s so awesome hearing all the parts gradually come together and its very personal part of me.

What has been one of the biggest highlights/achievements of your career?

I have achieved over 2 millions plays across all of my songs, and it makes me very proud to see how far my music has been able to reach with committing myself to it every single day. Another highlight is performing at a popular venue in Toronto called Sneaky Dee’s. It has such a cultural significance to the city so it was an honor to perform there. The ability to connect with a crowd being drawn into you in such an open and honest environment is something that is so fulfilling about music.

If you had a chance to collaborate with somebody who would that be?

Lizzo has been giving me so many good vibes from the energy that she spills into her songs. I’ve always been drawn to those artists who don’t hold back and just belt it out. I would want to collab with her because she has been giving the music world so much soul and passion. I’m glad that there’s someone like her sharing her powerhouse voice on the radio.

What other projects do you have coming up?

I will be releasing a new single within the next month, along with a new music video. I have been working with my producers on completing several songs throughout the summer, so I will gradually be releasing those into the new year. I am going to release a new EP/album in 2021, so keep your eyes out for that!

What is your best piece of advice for aspiring artists?

My advice would be to just get involved in everything. You learn and grow so much through experiences and there is no better teacher than that! Enrolling in lessons are extremely helpful to learn about areas where you can grow that you didn’t even know existed. Having that disciplined routine goes a long way because practice is what really helps you notice a difference in developing your skill-set. It’s important to find an instructor that you feel you are always gaining knowledge from in every lesson. Some instructors may not work with your individual strengths/weaknesses and just apply a “one-size-fits-all” session. Every musician is different and you have to find the methods that fit well with you and what helps support your passion.
