Jessica Carter Altman Carving Out Her Own Path in the Music World
Beauty, brains and talent are just a few of the words to describe singer and songwriter Jessica Carter Altman, who is finally receiving the flowers she deserves. I recently had the chance to talk to her, about her latest album “Aftermath”, her recent nomination at The Hollywood Independent Music Awards and her recent tour with Tyler Hilton.
Jessica Carter Altman is a breath of fresh air. Every note she sings reminds her audience of the beauty of spring and the freedom of summer. For her, music was a dream with determination — getting exactly the right mix between passion and practicality. She grew up surrounded by the arts. So, music was constantly thrust to the forefront of her aspirations. She got to experience magic at a tender age in live performances, like watching the Rolling Stones at just 13 and performing at the Kennedy Center. She had a charisma for singing onstage, but facing the reality of the music business brought her, as with many, to take a step backward.
Though she never lost her passion for music, Jessica chose a more traditional path: higher education, which sent her to the University of Michigan and law school. Her family was instrumental in this choice, for many of her relations had gone to law school and moved on to various careers. Jessica never viewed the process of her studying law as an end in itself but as a means of equipping herself with skills that would be useful in any other area of her choice. Her study of the law helped give her a particular angle from which to approach things, especially within the music business.
It wasn’t until law school that Jessica found her love for performing again. The pull of the stage was undeniable, and soon enough, she knew she couldn’t ignore her passion for music. She balanced a budding legal career against her artistic ambitions. One day, finally and with much courage, she went all-in on her music.
Jessica’s influences are just as eclectic as her path has been. From Christina Aguilera’s powerhouse belts to Frank Sinatra and Nina Simone’s smooth vibes, these are the ones that rest deep within an appreciation for real music that comes from some deeper place.
Her new music showcases her extraordinary voice and craft of songwriting, as found in the groovy, nostalgic track “Pieces.” Collaborating with producer Jason Lehning and bringing in Lucas Morton to co-produce “Clumsy,” Jessica crafted a unique sound that is modern yet classic at the same time, with a fair nod to the synth-wave styles she loves. But Jessica has shared more than the song “Pieces.” Her debut album, “Aftermath,” is available on several streaming platforms. What’s more? She just finished touring with the incredible Tyler Hilton.
Jessica Carter Altman is not simply a talented musical artist. She is one committed to staying true to herself. She stays accurate in her voice, literally and figuratively. Her story follows the passion where the road is rarely traveled, transitioning from law into music. With such a unique voice like her story, Jessica will leave her mark on the music scene for a long time.
