Award-winning Australian singer and songwriter Courtney Keil is one of the most exciting new artists on the country music scene today. Her new single and music video for “Nothin’ Like A Sure Bet” is out now on all platforms and I recently had a chance to catch up with her to talk music, and her plans for 2024.

Hi Courtney, it’s so lovely to meet you. Give us a little insight to how you first got into music. Who were some of your influences growing up?

Growing up my family always played a wonderful diverse range of music so some of the strong influences included Shania Twain, Dolly Parton, Trisha Yearwood, Fleetwood Mac, Taylor Swift and Whitney Houston.

Tell us about your new single “Nothin’ like a sure bet”. What was the inspiration behind this?

The idea for my latest single ‘Nothin’ Like A Sure Bet’ came after an afternoon nap and I was in that half-awake / half asleep time. Thinking about gambling on love and putting everything on the line for the right person. I wanted the song to have a healthy mix of confidence and sass and become a tapestry of classic country from the 90’s country music which I grew up on.

What would you say has been one of the biggest highlights/achievements of your career so far?

I was honored to be awarded ‘Best Female Vocal’ at the 2023 Australian Country Music People’s Choice Awards’ at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

It’s so refreshing to hear such an amazing Australian country artist like yourself. Do you have any plans to come to Nashville/the US?

I was fortunate to be able to visit Nashville in 2018 and 2019 to attend Tin Pan South Festival including the NSAI Songwriting Seminars. My songwriting/recording trip to Nashville in March 2020 was canceled due to travel restrictions but the plan is to come over again in 2024.

If you had a chance to work alongside anybody who would that be?

It would be an absolute pleasure and honor to work with Keith Urban or Trisha Yearwood, or both of them.

What other projects do you have coming up?

I will continue touring alongside my good friend and fellow country artist Bonnie Kellett, taking our ‘Fierce and Fearless’ tour, next stop the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January 2024. I’m also enjoying working on some new projects with my producer Rod McCormack and our wonderful friends and acclaimed songwriters Sam Gay, Templeton Thompson and Sally Barris (all based in Nashville) so there will be some exciting new music for your ears in 2024.

What is your best piece of advice for other aspiring artists?

Keep believing in yourself and focus on your dreams even when there may be naysayers who may attempt to discourage you. Share your innermost thoughts and dreams with a select group of people who genuinely care about you and keep cheering you on. You will eventually find your tribe.
