A Knockout Evening: The 14th Annual ‘Big Fighters, Big Cause’ Delivered Star Power and Heart
On May 21, 2025, the Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation hosted its 14th annual “Big Fighters, Big Cause” Charity Boxing Night, once again proving that the power of sport can serve a higher purpose. Held at the elegant Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey, the event brought together celebrities, athletes, philanthropists, and supporters in a unified effort to raise awareness and funds for pediatric type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Hosted by comedian and actor Chris Spencer, the evening struck a perfect balance between entertainment and impact. The red carpet was as vibrant as ever, with appearances by Craig Robinson, Johnny Gill, and honorees from Los Angeles Fire Dept. Station 69, recipients of the evening’s Golden Glove Award. Guests were welcomed by the stirring voice of Claire Khodara, who delivered a powerful rendition of the National Anthem.
The event’s main attraction — live boxing matches presented by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions — did not disappoint. Attendees witnessed fast-paced action from rising talents in the boxing world, providing an electric atmosphere that paid homage to the sport’s rich tradition while supporting a deeply meaningful cause.
Beyond the ring, guests participated in silent and live auctions featuring exclusive memorabilia and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Proceeds went directly to support the Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation’s mission: funding critical diabetes research and promoting healthy lifestyles for children.
Founded in 2009 by six-time world champion Sugar Ray Leonard and his wife Bernadette Leonard, the foundation has become a beacon of hope for families affected by diabetes. Drawing on Leonard’s own battles and triumphs both in and out of the ring, the foundation’s work continues to shine a light on the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes in children and the lifelong impact of type 1.
This year’s gala was not just a celebration of boxing legends and star power — it was a reminder of the transformative role of community. From the red-carpet arrivals to the final bell, “Big Fighters, Big Cause” was more than an event; it was a statement of purpose.
